Published by the Historical Society of Delaware, Delware History is similar in format to the Maryland Historical Magazine. Each volume is devoted to topics on the history of Delaware, but articles often cover regional issues. Articles are scholarly, yet the style clearly cultivates the general public as well as professional historians. Review articles are frequently published, but standard book reviews are not included as a regular feature. A bibliography of scholarship on Delaware history is regularly published annually or every other year.

This is the preeminent journal for the history of the American South. Contains four or so articles and numerous book reviews. Every other issue contains a useful section called "Book Notes" in which reviewers discuss edited works, abridgements of older and previously published works. The section also contains shorter reviews, gives a checklist of reprints, and lists bibliographies pertaining to the South. Each May issue provides a serial bibliography of the past year's works, both books and articles, on a variety of topics in Southern history. Topic headings include "Blacks and Slavery," "Bibliography and Historiography," "Economic," and so on.

This is an interdisciplinary journal that focuses on the Southwest U.S. Articles may be intellectual or social history, anthropology, literary studies, folklore, historiography, politics, Borderland studies, or regional natural history. Articles frequently include a number of historical and recent photographs. No serial or subject bibliographies.

Colorful publication, full of historical photographs and other artwork, arranged to illustrate interdisciplinary topics like "Photography in the West," "Oil," or "Music in the West." Each issue has 10-12 articles, ranging from 4-10 pages. Publishes some book reviews but no ongoing serial bibliography.
 
 
*Maryland Historical Magazine, 1966--. 4/yr.

Maryland Historical Magazine is the primary publication for scholarship on Maryland history. Essays are selected by an editor, are generally thorough, and encompass all time periods. Signed book reviews, historical society news, and a historical "picture puzzle" are also regular features. Finally, the volume features a thorough yearly bibliography on historical scholarship in Maryland.
 
 
Midwest Review, 1979--. 1/yr.

This review covers the region from Minnesota to Montana, from Colorado to Missouri. Articles focus on historical and cultural issues related to the region. Some issues have a number of historical photographs. Each issue contains 4-6 articles and 6-10 book reviews. No serial or subject bibliographies.

New England Quarterly: A Historical Review of New England Life and
Letters, 1928--.

An interdisciplinary journal concentrating on New England history, biography, political science, and literary criticism. Prestigious editorial board. Publishes one review essay in every issue in addition to book reviews. No serial or special feature bibliographies, but prior to 1967, the journal published "The Annual Bibliography of New England". Indexed in each volume by title and author.
 
 
Pennysylvania History, 1933--. 4/yr.

Pennsylvania History is published quarterly by the Pennsylvania Historical Association. The journal generally covers topics on all time periods of Pennsylvania history, but a regional focus is also frequently present. Articles are generally written by scholars and are thoroughly researched, but the style is accessible to the general public as well as academics. Regular signed book reviews and occasional review essays are included in the volume. A particularly interesting feature of the volume are the lengthy exhibit reviews frequently published. Bibliographies are not published by the journal.
 
 
Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, 1877--. 4/yr.

This volume is the main scholarly publication on all time periods and topics in Pennsylvania history. Published by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, this volume is targeted exclusively for academics (unlike Pennsylvania History). The articles are well researched by academic historians and are chosen by a scholarly editorial board. Also included in the volumes are several substantive signed book reviews, primarily historical documents, and occasional review essays. Thematic volumes are also occasionally published. Bibliographies are not featured by the journal.

Covers history mainly, though there is a good dose of popular culture. Each issue publishes 5 or so articles, and about the same number of book reviews. No bibliographies.

Published by the State Library in Richmond as a quarterly volume on Virginia history. Most contributors are academic historians but the scope and format of the volume is clearly meant for a public audience. The layout of the magazine is attractive with glossy color photos and illustrations. Articles are selected by an editor and are generally well-researched and reliable. Review essays and primary documents are often included in the magazine. Bibliographies are not included in the publication.
 
 
Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, 1893--. 4/yr.

This volume is published by the Virginia Historical Society as the primary volume for academic scholarship on Virginia history. All time periods are represented, with an emphasis on the colonial period. Each volume contains several solid articles by professional historians and numerous signed book reviews. Review essays, research notes, and historical documents are frequently included in the volume. Bibliographies are not published in the journal.

Published by the Western History Association. Subject matter goes beyond the "rough and tumble West" to consider women, blacks, Indians, and other ethnic groups in terms of their western experiences. Each issue also includes reviews of articles and reviews of recent books; these are arranged by topic so researchers can locate material w/ease. Also in each issue is a serial bibliography of 75-100 "recent articles," arranged topically or by disciplines. On a less regular basis, WHQ also lists recent dissertations, arranged by subject.
