Issues range through Southern fiction and Southern history with some cultural criticism. Articles deal with both current and past writers and topics. Each volume publishes essays, review essays, and book reviews and has a supplement that provides a briefly annotated serial bibliography of all Southern-related scholarship from the preceding year. Important source for study of 20th century writers, especially Faulkner and Welty.

Publishes annual bibliography of studies in Western American literature and authors, including Native American authors. In the same issue, lists current research (M.A. and Ph.D. theses) on Western American literature by department to which theses were submitted. Journal's emphasis is on Western literature and images such as Zitkala-Sa's autobiography or Deadwood Dick dime novels. All articles are footnoted with extensive works cited pages. There are essay reviews and book reviews.
