What is American Studies?

American Studies is an interdisciplinary field that draws widely on disciplines in the humanities and social sciences and asks and answers questions that individual disciplines do not address. It seeks especially to understand the socio-cultural processes that describe and explain the lived experience of Americans, past and present, as well as Americans' cultural identities. The program aims to help students develop knowledge that is comparative, historical, and critical, and informed by a high degree of personal awareness.

A small department with a friendly atmosphere and an excellent academic reputation, the American Studies program at Maryland is ranked among the top American Studies departments nationally.
