COLLEGE PARK, MD - Patrick R. Grzanka, a doctoral candidate in the department, has won one of the eight graduate teaching fellowships offered in a joint campus-wide program of the Center for Teaching Excellence and the Graduate School.

The review committee cited Mr. Grzanka's experience, commitment to enhancing undergraduate teaching, and his "impressive and promising" proposal for improving education at the University. Patrick will meet regularly with the other fellowship winners to discuss and resolve pedagogical issues at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He is completing his dissertation and is the assistant director of Honors Humanities.

The American Studies Department and Program at the University of Maryland is one of the oldest such programs in the United States, having operated continuously since 1945. For much of its history, the Program has been nationally recognized for its contributions to the field, which initially entwined history and literature. The Department offers B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. For more information about American Studies at UMD, please contact americanstudies@umd.edu or visit www.amst.umd.edu.
