Students sometimes lack experience working in communities different from their own. Faculty often worry about how to prepare students for the boundary crossing typical of community-based learning and how to deepen their reflection. This workshop provides a rationale for using 19 th century African American history and literature as safe sites for exploring cross-cultural and racial issues with students. Presenter will share selected passages from 19 th century African American literature texts and demonstrate how they can be used to enhance student preparation and reflection in community-based learning.
