Dr. Lorena Garcia: Respect Yourself, Protect Yourself: Latina Girls and Sexual Identity

Dr. Lorena Garcia is Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago.  Dr. Garcia will discuss her qualitative research that examines how Latina girls’ experiences with sexism, racism, homophobia and socioeconomic marginality inform how they engage and begin to rework their meanings and processes
of gender and sexuality. The presentation, based on her book, will emphasize how Latina youth themselves understand their sexuality, particularly how they conceptualize and approach sexual safety and pleasure.

This event is presented by the Consortium on Race, Gender & Ethnicity and the Maryland Population Research Center and co-sponsored by the Departments of American Studies and Women’s Studies and the U.S. Latina/o Studies Program.  Lunch will be served.
